Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General Edzai Absolom Chanyuka Chimonyo has urged Commander 5 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Simo Maseko to work hard on the Food Production Department Projects being undertaken by the formation.
Lieutenant General Chimonyo said this when he visited the 5 Infantry Brigade Farm on 25 April 2018.
The Commander ZNA said the formation had a mammoth task in ensuring the harvesting of the maize crop and planting winter wheat on time. “We are targeting to plant between 300 and 400 hectares of winter wheat this season here at 5 Infantry Brigade Farm so that we repay part of the funds to our financiers. Commander 5 Brigade you have a mammoth task here to make sure we meet this target.
If it was not for the problem of moisture content on our maize, we could have harvested the crop to pave way for the winter wheat. We have a lot to do here as of now. Let us plan for the harvesting of the maize and planting of the winter wheat,” said the Commander ZNA.
Meanwhile, the first batch of tilapia fish was ready for harvesting from 9 May 2018. There were 100 000 tilapia fish which were at various stages of growth with the first batch of 20 000 ready for harvest after weighing 250 grammes. The ZNA Commander was told that there was need for a blaster freezer before the fish could be transported to Ordinance Directorate for distribution to formations and units.
“We started this project of fish farming in November 2017 with 20 000 fingerlings which will be ready for harvest as from 09 May 2018. The type of fish we have is nile tilapia and they are harvested after at least six months from the day of deposit in the ponds. Our ponds are now holding 100 000 fish,” said Administration Staff Officer (Grade One) Fisheries, Lieutenant Colonel James Mtembo.
